I am a scattered bag of thoughts today. Which, when I think about, isn’t really a phrase anybody uses.
But who’s counting.
Imagine you have a bag full of things: papers, a book, a laptop, loose change, your wallet (which should probably be holding the loose change but isn’t), a sweater in case the office AC is overzealous, an umbrella, receipts from months past, a napkin, three pieces of gum, your phone, your phone charger, your head phones, and two pens (one of which ran dry weeks ago but you have yet to throw it out). The top isn’t zipped shut, as it probably should be, but you like to save time, and who has time to zip and unzip a bag every time you have to access the above? These seconds add up, people!
Then, because a guy named Murphy has a law – and no one knows why – you drop the bag. It slips from your grasp, and all comes crashing down.
The unwalleted change goes one way, the pens go another, your sweater blankets the umbrella (but does nothing to cushion the laptop), and the umbrella pops open. All of these possessions, in effect, are scattered.
You scramble to collect the change – where did it all go?? – while wrestling with the umbrella, fretting about the laptop – please, oh please don’t be broken – making sure nothing important has been released from the wallet, squishing a piece of gum beneath your knee, and shoveling everything else back into the bag, all the while hoping no one notices how incredibly uncoordinated and silly you look at this particular moment.
Welcome to my day!
Though the above scenario didn’t actually happen today, my brain has been in that exact scramble-to-put-everything-back-together-mode all day long.
Between last minute trip planning, problem solving, and your everyday work, I haven’t been able to get coordinated for more than about two seconds at a time.
And you know what that means right: the coffee is taking care of me today.
