We’ve been diving into the splendor that is Colorado for a month already. (March, where did you go?) Thank you all for stopping in, contributing, and supporting this campaign. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’d like to submit something – the more the merrier!
Today, I’ve got a little something for you in celebration of a beloved pastime….
****
Colorado has the sun, the sites, the history, the beauty.
Colorado has the Rockies.
And then Colorado has the Rockies.
Today is opening day at Coors Field.
The grass is freshly cut, the sun is shining, and the town has been painted over in purple.
Love for this sport is practically a hereditary trait in the Semenoff family.
Growing up, we would spend summers with our grandparents and soak up baseball. Grandma managing from her seat (often much better than the actual manager!), Grandpa quietly observing, us drinking in the whole show. The national pastime was very much the family pastime as well.
And now sitting in our childhood home with my sisters, typing this to you, my family is bedecked in purple, watching the Rockies, and the baseball loving trait continues.
We gather around our TVs, bar stools, and fields. We nickname months (Rocktober!), and rally with our boys. We join together in hope for a season, high-five strangers, and offer consolation during loss.
Baseball makes room for all of us in the club.
And, so, on this the opening of the 2011 season, I beseech you to join me.
All together now.
“Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don’t care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the Rockies,
If they don’t win it’s a shame.
For it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out,
At the old ball game.”
Go Rockies!
