Sharpie rules || tiny Tuesday thoughts

The rules of this Sharpie are somewhat limiting.

I wonder what sort of debate went into deciding what the Sharpie could and could not be used for:

  • poster inscribing — yes
  • letter writing — no
  • Converse sneaker embellishing — sure, why not?
  • temporary tattooing of your brother’s forehead — absolutely yes
  • writing on clothes — just as long as your mother doesn’t find out

*************************************************************

I’m getting my hair trimmed up this afternoon.

As I was walking to work this morning, an odd sensation of familiarity hit me and I realized that when I last got my hair cut a couple of months ago, I wore the exact same outfit. Down to the socks. I felt as if I’d been caught with something between my teeth, apparent to those around me, but initially escaping my notice.

Now I’m curious to see if this fashion rut extends to other areas of appointment. The next time I get my eyes examined, will I don the same duds? How about teeth cleaning and routine doctor checkups?

I’m not sure what this says about me, but I’m pretty sure it confirms that we truly are creatures of habit.

daily littles || instagram diptychs

Love it or hate it, the Instagram app is a social tool on the minds – and in the hands – of many. Divisive talking points aside, I think it’s terrific. I love having a creative little option always by my side to snatch up all those little moments that usually get folded away into the recesses of my brain just seconds after witnessing them. I’m finding that this app helps me not only see those moments, but also quickly document and arrange them into a timeline of the daily littles that make up a life.

So, here for you today are a handful of those daily littles. To see more, check out my Instagram profile.

I hope you’re all doing well! What’s new in life?

written words || recent reads

The books I've been reading

When I was growing up, my parents read to me and my siblings almost every single night.

From Dr. Seuss, to the Narnia books, a little Mark Twain and Norwegian Christmas advent books, we were delighted nightly with stories of adventure and intrigue, and shown role models in these strong characters that faced all odds. In making this a constant in our lives, our parents gave us the kind of education you get not from direct lessons but by example. They also instilled in us a great love for the written word.

That love hasn’t dimmed. Though it can be too easy to get lost in the depths of the internet these days, I try as much as possible to read books – even just a chapter or two – every single day. There is so much to be gained from literature that you can’t always find in blog posts and articles and tiny bits of information found on Twitter. You get a viewpoint into humanity wholly different from your own and get to see a new situation that you may never come across in your daily life. You learn something about yourself depending on how you react to these stories. And more than anything, I’ve found reading to be a really good way to self-reflect and find some quiet in an increasingly frenetic world.

stabilizing entity || Radiohead concert

Radiohead came to Colorado last night.

I went to their concert at the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colo.

I did not take this photo.

However, my head was used as a stabilizing entity (read: tripod) in the act of taking this photo. So I feel about one-tenth ownership over it. Dan is a good head-and-a-half taller than I am, making me the perfect height to use as a stabilizing entity (read: tripod) while taking a picture in a very dimly lit concert arena with nothing but an iPhone.

Thus proving that if this whole being a photographer thing falls through, I can start a business whereby I act as a tripod, lightstand, gear-schlepping maven.

Lest we forget this:

I rest my case.

p.s. Prior to taking this rockin’ iPhone photo which I so solidly contributed to, Dan did in fact photograph the Radiohead show for Reverb with professional cameras and everything. Wild thing that he is. Check out the Reverb review and his gallery. Photo number four is my favorite. It’s pretty rad. Yes, rad. Going to rock shows results in me using words such as rad. It’s an osmosis thing.

p.p.s. Both photos shown here today are courtesy of my rad partner, Dan Petty. And this concludes the portion of the show where I use the word “rad” one too many times. Tune in next week when we explore the complexities of the word “groovy.”

Christmas cards || The Clutter Offensive

Let’s put it to a vote:

The beginning of March is probably a good time to take down the Christmas cards, yeah?

All those in favor? Opposed?

Motion passes!

This moment brought to you by: The Clutter Offensive. Cleaning out Anya’s studio one dust bunny at a time.

What’s on the docket for everyone this weekend?
