Hello? Remember me? The shamefaced girl who hasn’t posted anything on here in almost a week?
I’m sorry for my absence. This business of life has proven rather needy and attention hungry as of late. That in itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing. What is unfortunate is that it’s the kind of busyness that is largely behind-the-scenes and unpicturesque (you’ll notice I haven’t changed much in the intervening days; I still make up awkward sounding words). And therefore, not too exciting to relate to you all.
While that is my explanation, it’s not very explanatory (see, same girl). So here for you is a quick list of what’s been occupying my brain space. (Eew, brain space.)
(1) First, and foremost, Dan and I are diligently editing through our second wedding. We are nearly finished and are excited to get them all into the hands of the bride and groom (pictured above). (Don’t worry, I took many many pictures that were in focus. It’s this new thing I’m trying: properly photographed photos. I know, I know, thinking outside the box here. In all seriousness though, I just liked the sort of gauzy effect of the photo above, and thought it was fitting prior to the big reveal of the entire wedding. Anyway…)
(2) On Saturday, I joined a few comrades to photograph the Underground Music Showcase – a four-day indie music festival here in Denver. I was part of the photographic team last year as well, and very much enjoy the whole experience. I’ll have a few more photos to show you from that in the upcoming days.
(3) While ideally being a photographer is about shooting and connecting with subjects and actively taking pictures and telling great stories, the lion’s share of owning a photography business actually goes on while we aren’t behind a camera, but instead, in front of a computer doing a number of things.
For instance, editing through shoots is a monumental task (i.e. going through roughly 2,000 images from a wedding, narrowing that down and tweaking them as necessary) and takes time and attention. Also, self-marketing is a huge part of this business – you can’t get work if no one sees your work, and you have to be active in putting it out there. This means putting stuff up on your blog, sharing that through social media, and keeping your site up to date. Then there’s the answering of e-mails, communicating with clients, etc. etc.
So while I have been working away, there isn’t much I can show you about that process.
Because really, most of the time, this is what it looks like:
And who really wants to see that?
