California colors || 10 on 10

At the end of April, Dan and I flew out to San Francisco for a week of vacation with my family. I have spent many a week in San Francisco over the years and love it more every time I visit. I am fond of many a thing in the fair city, not least of all its rather photogenic nature. So for this month’s 10-on-10 I pulled together some of the most colorful images from the batch that I shot on this most recent trip to the bay.

Springtime on the local beat || Photojournalism

It is time, my fair friends, for an update on local journalism stories I’ve photographed recently for the YourHub section of the Denver Post. I curated these from a number of shoots I’ve been assigned since the turn of the new year into 2016. (Is that a phrase people use, “turn of the new year”? Maybe we should make it into a thing.)

Now that we are officially rocking the month of May, I thought it would be appropriate to include photos featuring planting little seedlings, creating new artistic works, and finishing up the school year. Summer will be soon upon us, so let’s all venture into gardens and take in the rich world.

Oh, and p.s. — I’ve got something of a new project in the works that I’ll be sharing with you soon. I just need to tinker away behind-the-scenes a little bit more, then will introduce you all so we can be best pals. Stay tuned!

Alfonso Valenzuela references a breakfast order while preparing food at Ralston Road Cafe on February 18, 2016, in Arvada, Colorado. With ongoing and delayed redevelopment at the Ralston Creek site, several neighboring businesses have vacated their properties. However, Evan Marlangoutsos, owner of Ralston Road Cafe, intends to continue operating the restaurant.

Video: MPLS//MINN

Minneapolis Minnesota

I didn’t know what to expect from our long weekend trip to Minneapolis, but for some reason I suspected that I would leave the city happy to have acquainted myself with the metropolis, but generally all right with just being pen pals. The sorts of pals that send each other greeting cards around the holidays and maybe check in on favored social media accounts around birthday times. Etc. Etc.

Weekending in Minneapolis, Minnesota

It’s a good thing to tour a new city. It’s a better thing to tour a new city with a good friend who knows where all the cool kids hang out.

Last weekend we spent a couple of days getting to know Minneapolis, Minnesota. The land of 10,000 lakes, if the state license plate is to be believed. Both of us have actually been to Minneapolis before, Dan for business and me on a family road trip many moons ago (I just crunched the numbers and “many moons” in this instance equals approximately 240 moons; now that’s a wowza for you). So for this trip we built in a few days to explore the metropolis and see what’s what in the fair city.

birthday kidnapping || 10 on 10

To celebrate the kick-off to the last year of my twenties, my family kidnapped me. With love. My mother took the endeavor very much to heart and proclaimed I must be blindfold with a pillowcase “because that’s just how it’s done.” (Since reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for book club she has been channeling Tom Sawyer just a little bit.) I evaded said blindfolding, and with three successive rings of the door bell all the family ladies were here and off we went.

But first, the monthly shoutout to my fellow 10-on-10ers:

OK, now off we go.

To a magic school bus. Banjo Billy’s Bus Tours is sort of a cross between the actual Magic School Bus (Ms. Frizzle, what up) and something maybe the Beatles would have rented to explore the wonders of Colorado.
