“the art of walking” || Thoreau’s 195th Birthday

Today is Henry David Thoreau’s 195th Birthday. Or would be, if had extreme longevity of life.

In honor of this auspicious day, I give you this above photo taken at Walden Pond last year during our New England Road Trip. The likeness of Thoreau is both striking and contemplative, don’t you think?

I also give you this excerpt from one of his essays:

“I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks […]

Half the walk is but retracing our steps. We should go forth on the shortest walk, perchance, in the spirit of undying adventure, never to return, prepared to send back our embalmed hearts only as relics to our desolate kingdoms. If you are ready to leave father and mother, and brother and sister, and wife and child and friends, and never see them again—if you have paid your debts, and made your will, and settled all your affairs, and are a free man—then you are ready for a walk.”

Again, striking and contemplative. I’m sensing a theme here. Can you imagine launching out on such a walk? An act that to me has always been synonymous with leisure, and digesting Thanksgiving dinner, and passive in many respects. Yet Thoreau says to truly embark on a walk — in the most honest and true way — one must be willing to never return. As if the walk was itself an exploration of a new world, full on Magellan-style. Food for thought.

And finally, I offer this video, pulled from the vaults just this morning. The first half has absolutely nothing to do with Thoreau, but the second half is all about Concord, Walden Pond, and a special little cabin:

Happy 195th Birthday, H.D. Thoreau. You don’t look a day over 190.

summer in squares || VSCO cam photos

Hello, my lovelies. Summer has been sweltering here in Denver for the past several weeks. We have had plus-100 degree days. We have had a two-week run of plus-95 degree days. We have had fires. And finally, the blessed rain did come….and promptly flooded half of Denver. (OK, I’m exaggerating, but it felt that way.)

We can never be fully content can we? It’s too hot, we wish for rain, it starts dumping, and then we just want the sun to come back out. I’m pretty sure Mother Nature spends most of her time with arms thrown up in exasperation saying, “WHAT DO YOU PEOPLE WANT FROM ME?!”

If only we knew. If only.

But, besides the ups and downs of the Colorado climate — I say this like such a climate is somehow new and shocking around these parts, but come on, it’s Colorado after all! — the summer thus far has been rather lovely. I’ve consumed fresh fruit (sadly, not all fruit made it; RIP little cherry in the trash can) walked through the rain (and attempted to photograph myself doing so; the outcome was more melty than magnificent) , and fancy-phone-photographed all varieties of things.

I’m working on some personal projects right now (anyone else notice the severe lack of videos around here lately? just sayin’…) and between weddings and some freelance editorial work, it has been a productive, albeit full, summer season. I have to say though, I have been longing for more summer downtime. Time free of schedules and responsibilities. Time devoted to nothing but being outside, being goofy, and being on (faux) summer break.

But what about you? What are you doing this summer? What adventures have you embarked upon?

the fourth || office party style

Happy Fourth of July!

I am stuck in the office for most of today, but fear not! There is ice cream concocting away in the break room, patriotic fruit displays, and the memory of last night’s firework show above the City and County Building to keep me in a seventy-six trombones sort of mood.

I hope you are all minding your fingers, eyebrows and stomach capacities today.

Love to my country and love to you all,

-a.e.

Jersey in June || East Coast 2012

A tranquil moment in New Jersey this afternoon.

One which was followed closely by a less tranquil, much more icky tick situation. Don’t worry — it’s been resolved. But for a minute there, I expected the only solution was to let the ticks just have the country. I hear France is lovely in June.

Tomorrow we photograph a wedding, then there is more relaxation and recuperation on the Sunday docket.

Happy weekending, everyone!
