quietly awaiting || Denver wedding preview

On a wedding day, I am typically the photographer who remains with the bride through most of the celebration. From makeup, to putting the dress on, to walking down the aisle, I am the gal that sticks by her side, capturing all those last minute details.

As such, I feel like I could start some sort of series of those final, heart racing moments before she sees her groom. Back in June, I posted this photo of Lauren waiting with her father outside the church doors, and today I have this photo from Johnny and Erica’s Denver wedding this past Saturday.

There’s such beauty in this moment. Erica is quietly awaiting to be called upstairs to the church, but beneath that calm countenance is a splendid entanglement of nerves and excitement. I asked her how she was doing and she told me she couldn’t believe she was standing here, dressed in a long white gown, a gossamer veil lowered over her face. She couldn’t believe she was about to become Johnny’s wife.

Seconds later, we walked up the stairs.

roadies || destination wedding photography

Scenes from the road this past weekend. We flew into Philadelphia, briefly stayed in New Jersey, then drove across Pennsylvania for four hours until we hit State College. Cue the wedding shoot, a couple hours of sleep, another four-hour road trip back across Pennsylvania, and then all aboard for the flight back to Denver.

Whirlwind. Coffee. East coast drivers. Those are the buzz words for this trip.

red eyes, send coffee || tips and tricks from a non-expert

I must have had an aneurysm of some kind because about a month ago, I agreed that taking a red-eye flight to Pennsylvania for our next wedding shoot was a good idea.

Not my finest moment.

But, the die is cast, the stage is set, the coffee is filtering (oh, that’s not a thing?), and like it or not, we are jumping on a flight tonight that will deposit us in to Pennsylvania at 6 a.m. ET.

Yippee?

Should you ever find yourself in this situation , here are some tips and tricks from a non-expert to get you through:

  1. Try to nap in the afternoon before your late flight. This will give you a little reserve of rest, and give you a chance to break in your newly acquired and ever-handy blindfold, beauty rest, eye cover thing. You know the one.
  2. When confronted with the choice of trying to nap on the plane, or ingesting more coffee to keep you going strong for the duration of your flight, always choose more coffee. More coffee is the answer to every question. I think Confucius once said that.
  3. Load up on new tunes and reading material before boarding the plane. If you don’t have a “Get Psyched” mix — get one!
  4. Don’t forget to pack your darkest pair of shades to don upon your arrival. Those red eyes and dark under-eye circles ain’t going to cover themselves.
  5. Once on the plane and in the air, entertain yourself by crafting the airsickness paper bags into hats a la’ Martha Stewart. Try to get your seatmate to don a hat of his or her own. After that, the entire row, and from there…the whole plane. You’re all in this together, my friends, might as well wear silly hats. (The British monarchy’s motto I do believe.)
  6. If you are the type that can sleep on airplanes, go ahead and catch a few zzz’s now. Those who are not that type (yours truly falls in that category), hence the more coffee mantra, locate your other non-sleepers. If one of them is within comfortable conversational distance, start chatting. See how many Airplane! references you can work in before they call you on it. “Surely you can’t be serious.” “I am serious…and don’t call me Shirley.”
  7. Revel in the (relative) quiet, take comfort in the rejuvenation inherent with four blissfully, phone-free hours.
  8. Just before you begin your final descent, ask for one more cup of coffee to jump-start your disembarking routine and entry into a new time zone and new day.

Congratulations! You survived another red-eye flight.

Now repeat after me: Never, ever again.

rain and weddings || Colorado wedding photography

The rain in Spain stays mainly…all over whatever photo shoot Dan and I are in the middle of!

The first few shoots of this wedding season came with their fair share of cold, rain and difficulty. One of those shoots was the wedding of Brice and Jamie up at Chautauqua Park in Boulder. It rained, it poured, it forced the wedding into a just-for-such-an-occasion tent. But! Despite the troublesome weather, Brice and Jamie wouldn’t be deterred from their excitement and happiness. Having such clients really makes our job so much more fun, easy and rewarding.

Visit A&D Photography to see more of Brice and Jamie’s Chautauqua wedding.

anticipation || Wedding photography

This is one of my favorite moments of a wedding day.

The months of planning are done. The hair and makeup are set. The dress is on. Guests are all seated. The music is seconds from changing into that classic tear jerker, the wedding march. The groom is on the other side of those doors, waiting to take her hand and become her partner in love and life.

And I swear, my heart starts beating faster every time I witness this moment. The sheer anticipation, the joy and excited nerves, the clenching of her father’s arm, even the way the doorman rests his hand on the handle, ready to swing the door open.

There’s a certain romance that lives in that happy tension. And I’m a total sucker for it!

(This frame is from Lauren and Brian’s Princeton, N.J., wedding from a few weeks back.)
