a roman pilgrimage || our grand adventure

Forty minutes off the plane, we sat in a phone bank lounge area, doing everything short of creating a human pyramid to try and get a good WiFi signal. The young boy jumping around nearby with more energy than the entire blue-shirt wearing tour group could muster would probably have helped us out.

We were in Rome. And all that stood between us and a bed were sufficient directions from the airport to our little rental apartment. Not impossible. Unless you can’t speak the language, read the signs or generally navigate a wholly foreign metropolis. Oh, and you have no sustainable access to the internet for maps and translations and route info. Listen, sometimes you make plans with great efficiency and sometimes you have just finished enjoying your wedding day, moving into a new little cottage and crossing the globe to a whole other continent for a two-week honeymoon. As such, we may not have given our travel plans the attention they deserved.

We did eventually make it to our apartment. We may have taken a few wrong turns. And there could have been a brief moment when I sat down on top of my luggage and declared that Dan should just “leave me here to die.” (Not my finest hour.) But, we found it. And then such a glorious time we had wandering all around Rome. After we slept for about a billion hours.

Rome. It’s a beauty of a place. And also chaotic, and messy. Endless in its surprises and sheer masses of humanity. A vibrant collection of personal and magnificent histories. It was a city that affected me in a way I didn’t expect. Somewhere in its cobblestones and alleys and churches and cuisine we stitched together a pilgrimage. It proved to be the perfect first leg of our grand European adventure.

10 on 10 || November

So October happened. It’s sort of a blur of stress, happiness, schedules, to do lists, centerpieces, passports, cameras, Europe, pasta (lots and lots of pasta). Here’s a quick list of all the things that have happened since last we spoke.

  1. Wedding rehearsal
  2. Rehearsal dinner
  3. WEDDING (!!!!)
  4. Champagne
  5. Realized we’re heading to Europe in 36 hours
  6. Packed
  7. Flew to Toronto
  8. Flew to Rome
  9. Rome
  10. Pasta (times a billion)
  11. Watched a game show in which the prime objective was to conjugate verbs (allegedly)
  12. Red wine
  13. Train to Paris
  14. Paris
  15. Climbed the Eiffel Tower
  16. Train to London
  17. Flight from London to Frankfurt
  18. Train to Berlin
  19. Berlin
  20. Fell in the middle of a busy, Berlin intersection while wearing a little black dress and sparkly heels
  21. Felt like the star of a sitcom when all the nearby Germans audibly gasped at my spread-eagle landing technique
  22. I don’t want to talk about it
  23. Train back to Frankfurt
  24. Flight to Toronto
  25. Flight to Denver
  26. Life

And that’s just the brief version. I have heaps and heaps of stories and photos to share, but for today, I give you another installment of our continued 10-on-10 project. It features the many trains of Europe, and the windows we look out of when we ride them. trains_10-on-10_november 003-3 trains_10-on-10_november 008-8

10 on 10 || September

All the tiny little moments passing subtly away forever. Preserving those moments is what first attracted me to photography many a moon ago. The same can likely be said for almost every person who ever picked up a camera before, whether they describe it as such or not. We are already ten days in to September. Just one month (and a handful of days) until our wedding, and I could not be more surprised that we’ve come so far so quickly. (Even though every person I ever spoke to in the wide world told me this would be exactly how it went.) It’s evermore apparent that preserving these special, fleeting moments of our personal lives is so, so important.

As you’ve come to expect over the past couple of months, the tenth day of the month signals the arrival of another installment of 10-on-10.This project provides a great reminder to breathe in the delicious wonder of our own lives, and not just that which we have the honor of documenting during the course of our careers.

Dan and I recently traveled to Boston for an intensely short stay. He was going for a work-related conference/workshop; I was going because I had a camera, the will, and a desire to take a day away from the consistent chaos of my Colorado life right now. I had less than 24 hours to wander and photograph my way around the town. Here are ten of the photos I most liked from that time. No easy task to narrow down my full take to just these ten, but it is a good exercise in photographic self-control.

land of steel || Pittsburgh stills

Prior to last month’s wedding celebration just outside of Pittsburgh, I had never actually stepped foot in the famed city of steel. I envisioned it being a giant machine of urban manufacturing, concocted of steel widgets and whirligigs. (Not unlike what you might find in a Dr. Seuss illustration.)

As with all things in life, reality is never quite how you imagined it beforehand (there was not a whirligig in sight), but after getting only a few precious hours in this city, I left with a whetted appetite to return for a proper exploration soon.

lighthouses and seashores || New Hampshire & Maine stills

Have you ever been to Portsmouth, N.H.? It’s possibly the most charming little east coast town I’ve ever set eyes on. All bricks and ocean and delight. We set sight on this hamlet last weekend for the wedding of two of Dan’s dear friends from college. And it was perfection. Hanging out with all of Dan’s buddies from his Richmond days. Dancing the night away. Breathing in the fresh, ocean air. It’s the first wedding we’ve had the pleasure to attend (sans cameras in hand) since getting engaged.  It was equal parts exciting and inspiring and surreal to imagine that in just four months, the two of us will be walking down our own aisle and saying our own vows. We’ve been working a million miles an hour this entire year, it was really great to spend a weekend out of town with a tremendous group of individuals.

Oh, and lighthouses. We drove up to Maine on Sunday because….well, why not?
