the recentlys || fancy phone selections

I’m starting a new series here. It may be every Friday. It may be every other Friday. It may appear on a Tuesday one week, just to see if you’re paying attention.

It’s called the recentlys.

FAQs

Q: Do you know that “recentlys” doesn’t even vaguely resemble a proper word?

A: Yes I do! But sometimes you have to march against the current of the masses. And sometimes, you just have to start your own parade all together. I’ll let you decide which of those analogies is more suitable in this instance.

Q: What will be included in this series?

A: Fancy phone photos of all varieties — in-between, quiet moments and snagged frames while on assignment, incidentals that I think are humorous. And probably (definitely) coffee.

Q: What will you be shooting these photos with?

A: These will all be shot with the fancy phone formerly known as the iPhone 4. As far as I know, it’s still called the iPhone 4 to the tech savvy amongst us, but I ceased calling it that pretty much right away. See the parade comment above.

Q: When will this series launch?

A: Right now!

(All photos processed with the VSCO cam app.)

(And yes, the FAQs were staged.)

(I’m sorry you had to find out this way.)

the fella || a birthday

He’s a runner. He’s a photographer. He’s a journalist.

He’s a $1 taco enthusiast.

He’s a business partner (mine! I’m a lucky gal that way). He’s a friend. He’s an older brother.

He’s a genuine, compassionate, driven, decent and caring fellow, the likes of which I’ve never known before.

And today, we celebrate his birthday.

A very happy day to you, Daniel. This next year is going to be one for the books. I know it.

eleven years || 9/11 anniversary

(9/11 memorial site in New York City | June 2012)

We count the years as they tick by at an increasing rate…

We reflect on what happened, why it happened…

We think about where we were at that moment…

We rebuild…

We remember.

Eleven years already.

My heart is with you all today.

the four fellas || a plant story

If you’ve been a reader of the [anya elise blog] for some time now (Hi, Mom!), then you will likely remember my first adventure in plant rearing.

You’ll also remember it didn’t go well.

So, what do you suppose persuaded me it was wise to give it another go?

(1) The odds are (likely) in my favor that at least one of these fellas will survive. Right?

Maybe?

Hopefully…

(2) There are four of them! (As if that wasn’t clear.) How could I pass up the opportunity to get four-plants-in-one? That’s a deal, and my mother instructed me to always be on the lookout for deals.

(3) The Four Fellas look rather dashing atop a shelf, beside Steinbeck, overlooking the street below, don’t you agree?

(4) I can’t have pets at my studio. The lease dictates as much and, truth be told, there just isn’t enough space in the ol’ studio to effectively introduce a pet into it. So I have to outfit the area with other living things. Horticultural things. Quadruplet horticultural things.

(5) I needed a new subject to photograph against the backdrop of my wood floors. I just love these wood floors. They have character and good coloring. And look good with cowboys. Really, what else can you ask for in a floor?

And those are the reasons. You can’t really top cowboys, so we’ll finish off strong and call it a week.

Weekend away, my dear friends. And enjoy it!

the brother || a birthday

My brother, Christopher, he’s the only boy of the Semenoff sibling set. Three girls, one boy. As such, he’s always been a little outnumbered.

But, despite his lack of a bro to call his own, he is one of the pair of middles — me being the other — and over the ages, he and I have bonded over this shared placement in the hierarchy of kids. Some say we share one brain (ahem – Emily – ahem), some say we are more twin-like than our three year age difference should allow, some say we should lay off the coffee (ahem – Emily again – ahem). But one thing that can be said about all four of us, is we are a tight-knit group. The Denver Four, as one out of town cousin once branded us. We have each others’ backs through thick and thin. Not a day goes by when I’m not in contact with each of them in some way (text messages, phone calls, Twitter shout-outs). When we were up in Aspen a few weekends ago, someone observed that we always seem to be huddled together, traveling in a pack. And, frankly, we wouldn’t be nearly the same strong pack without our brother.

So, Christopher, on this your birthday, we the sister portion of the Denver Four would like to wish you a very happy day. You are such a comfort in times of trouble, a quick-wit when we need a laugh, and an inspiration as you take the steps to create the life you want.

Much love to you, twin-face. I raise my coffee mug to you this morning.

Happy Birthday.
