Kevin and Ellery || Engagement Photography

You would think that fall colors — the changing of the guard from green leaves to yellow— would be something one could come by in a town called Aspen, in the mountains of fair Colorado. After all, the town shares the name of our favored and most famous* autumn-hued tree. Sadly, it seems there’s some sort of rule that dictates you will not be able to find such colors when you’re hoping to use them as a backdrop for an engagement photo session. At least not very easily.

Luckily, the couple in question are among the loveliest you could ask for and worked with us to find the perfect setting, rally against the fading light (and quickly dropping temperatures of a mountain valley in late September), and come up with some photos that I love. Particularly this one.

I love the in between moments of photo shoots. Brides and grooms spend a lot of time posing for pictures from the time they get engaged through their wedding day. We work hard to make those poses comfortable, natural and beautiful. But there’s always something to be said for the moments that are off script. There’s a realness to them that can’t be directed.

We shared several more photos from Kevin and Ellery’s session over at A&D Photography. But as I was looking through my take again and thinking about engagement photography and weddings and the role we the photographers play I thought I would go ahead and share this one with you. So that’s that for now.

(*I have no statistics to back up this declaration. It just seems like it’s probably a true fact. How’s that for the scientific method?)

amy beth and chris || engagement photos

Hello, my darlings. I have some beautiful people to share with you today. We are very much looking forward to photographing Amy Beth and Chris’ wedding this Saturday. They will be wed on the same patio on which they got engaged, at a friend’s house in the mountains. After the ceremony we will be jumping on some chair lifts and fly to the top of said mountain to take photos of them and their wedding party. It’s going to be magical I’m sure of it.

For now, Amy Beth and Chris, everyone.

Andrea & Dave || engagement photography

It is possible to tumble head over heels for a photo shoot. Let me tell you. We met up with Andrea and Dave last month for an engagement session in preparation for their November wedding. We hit up the theater district in Denver (yes, Denver is totally hip enough to have a theater district) and then wandered around the LoDo area (“lower downtown” for those in the know) for the second half of their session. Let me tell you, guys, Andrea and Dave were an absolute dream to work with. Genuine, relaxed, full of laughter, excitement, and willingness to wander down the “least scary alleyway in Denver” with us. (Or so Dan dubbed it.) (I’m all about the parentheticals today.) (That’s not even a word.) We couldn’t have asked for a better couple to hang out with.

in the woods || engagement preview

As you may recall we have a rather involved proposal story. As such, we always love hearing tales from our couples about when they got engaged. Especially when those couples want to incorporate their proposal stories into an engagement shoot.

Alex and Jessica also got engaged while out on a hike in the woods. So, as we brainstormed engagement shoot locations, they pretty quickly decided the perfect place would be back on that trail in the mountains…

I’ll have many more from this session soon, but just loved these two images and decided to share them posthaste. What can I say, I’m the captain of this ship and am drunk with power. And possibly too much caffeine.

What a beauty, right? More soon!

“What are you doing?!” || On getting engaged

Guys,

I had a doozy of a blog post scheduled for today. It involved the ocean and sharks and a near death experience (yes, OK fine, I’m exaggerating). It was all set and shiny and ready to go. But, that particular story will have to wait until another day. Because this weekend, a very important and wonderful and shocking thing happened. An even bigger doozy that involved something even more shiny:

Yes, he popped the question. And yes, my first response when he dropped to one knee was, “What are you doing?!” I’m such a romantic.

And somehow he managed to do this while photographing the whole thing remotely using a trigger he was holding in his pocket. The fact that he was able to photograph it, hold his balance on one knee, on top of a rock, on top of  mountain (!), while holding a ring in the other hand and propose in an eloquent, beautiful manner without falling.dropping.stuttering.plunging to his doom still shocks me. He’s like a one man circus act, this fellow. This fellow that I will be marrying. This fellow that I love very much.

He wrote a great post explaining the whole proposal in detail on our wedding photography blog. I couldn’t say it better myself, so skedaddle on over there if you’re into that kind of thing.

We’ve gotten a tremendous response from friends and family regarding our news, so I just want to take a moment to say thank you – so much – for the compassion, excitement, cheer and congratulations you’ve sent our way. We are thrilled and the support you are showing us makes it all the more amazing. Thank you, thank you.

Now, stay tuned for tales of mishap and mayhem as we dive into the unknown territory of wedding planning.

Love,

-a.e.
