aspen mountains || fujifilm x100

We returned to the Aspen mountains of Colorado a few weekends ago. It’s a wonderfully peculiar little hamlet in the depths of the Rocky Mountains. Dan and I traveled there after photographing a wedding in Crested Butte. The following photos are a combo of Crested Butte, Aspen, and the road in between them both. All shot, once more, on the fuji x100.

Time is rushing by so quickly. I hope you’re all capturing the moments you can as they come along.

about town || fujifilm x100

I have a new little fella in my daily photo arsenal. A Fujifilm X100. Small, compact, incomparable in image quality among cameras in its class. I’ve had it for about two weeks now, and have kept it always within arm’s reach. It’s really been nice having a lighter, more convenient camera to tote around. Sometimes you need a different tool to stoke some inspiration in your creative mind.

I’m still learning its nuances, but wanted to share a few images that I’ve wrangled up thus far. These were all shot in the Denver area on my many walkabouts in the city and beyond.

10 on 10 || a new project

Hello and welcome to the debut of a brand new collaborative project.

Back in May, Courtney Zerizef — a photographer based in Portland — reached out to me with an idea. Frustrated with her lack of personal documentation, Courtney had decided to challenge herself to post ten, non-work related photos onto her blog every month. They would all be shot on the same day, all be free of any ties to a professional shoot, and would be posted on the tenth day of each month. Ten photos, on the tenth day — 10 on 10. Voila!

To add a layer of community (and accountability) to the project, Courtney decided to include a number of other professional photographers from around the county. So she invited myself, as well as four others, to get involved. I loved the idea of taking on a long-term, personal project. I also loved the idea of widening my circle of comrades in the big ol’ photo world. Which brings us to today. Welcome, again.

For the next twelve months, I will be routinely posting a 10-on-10 update here. I hope you enjoy taking a look at a bit of personal work, and I would definitely encourage you to follow the links I’ve included below of the five other photographers joining this experiment.  They are all fabulous, and I’m very excited to get to know them each a bit better.

Ready, set, go.

——

So as some of you know, at the beginning of this month I moved from my little, city studio to a mountain house with my father and two siblings. My studio lease had expired and rather than renew it for just the few remaining months between now and our wedding, I decided to invade my family’s personal space (what’s family for, right?), and take up a room in my dad’s newly acquired mountain retreat. I’ve only been here for a brief time so far. Adjusting to the nuances of this new living situation has been an experiment in and of itself, but I have to say it’s been pretty great so far. It’s quiet, and serene up here, and nice to have a calm hamlet to retreat to after a long day’s work. This move also afforded me the perfect subject matter for my first 10-on-10 installment. Allow me to introduce you to the Mountain House. And to two men in my life, Dan and Chris. The betrothed and the bro.

Hardly a terrible view.

So there you have it. You’ve gotten a taste for this idea, so proceed ahead to these other fine examples.

the graduate || class of 2013

The youngest of our little clan graduated last weekend. Here is her inspiring face.

_AES7397bw

She’s 18, learning the ropes of adulthood, and preparing to launch into her collegiate career. What better way to celebrate that than to introduce her to New York City? So, tomorrow, the girls of the clan (sisters, mom, me) will go on a jaunt to the big city. Neither Elise nor my mom have ever known the thrill of walking the avenues of NYC, so I’m particularly excited for this trip. I can’t wait to see what they think of the over-caffeinated metropolis. Prepare the coffee IV. Stat!

seven bridges || a Colorado hike

….and yes, there were in fact seven bridges. Shocking how that works out. We went on a hike in the mountains just west of Colorado Springs this past weekend. We got some of that delicious Colorado sun, we crossed many bridges, we attempted to make different photos of each bridge even though they looked suspiciously similar to one another as if we were trapped in an infinite loop. I think I missed by true calling as a guide book author.

Thank heavens for this fellow, who wandered into the scene just in time to rescue this not very unique seventh bridge.

But really, Colorado and all its bridges are fabulous and you should come explore them this summer.

Contrary to Dan’s belief, we do have water and the need for bridges in this state. Trust me, I am the honorary (self-appointed) guide book writer of Colorado.

Over and out.
