26 || on predictability

Last week I reached the ripe, predictable age of 26. I’m not sure why it feels predictable. On your 16, 18, 21, and 25th birthdays, you feel like you’ve reached some sort of milestone. Legal to drive, legally an adult, legal to raise a toast in a bar, legal to rent a car (woo, big fun). But 26? Well, welcome to the rest of your adulthood. Here’s a copy of the tax code. Good luck. Outside of the decade birthdays — 30, 40, 50, etc. — you don’t have many more fixed age milestones. I suppose, in a way, that actually makes future birthdays less predictable. Because you don’t know what the threshold of each year will bring. Maybe 26 will be the year I finally learn to surf. Maybe it will be the year I ride cross-country in a caboose. Maybe it’s the year I will get married. Wait a second…. (I kid, I kid.)

So, forget the original thesis of this post. I have hence decided that though I have few expected birthday milestones left to hit, life will henceforth be less predictable and more open to any possibility. (Consequently, this is also how I wrote most of my papers in college. I’d start on one path with one thesis in mind, and end up convincing myself of the opposite in the course of writing the darn thing. Efficient.)

The point is, 26 years ago my mother did this Herculean thing. She had a child, the second of what would one day be four. That day became my birthday. And though each year we get celebrated on our birthdays, I think it’s important to celebrate the person who really did all the heavy lifting that day: our mothers. So, Mom (though this is five days behind schedule, I blame tax season) thank you for being the rock and always gentle force behind us all. We love you.

Happy 2nd Child Day to you!

gem || a standalone

We only have just shy of six months to go until our wedding. Somehow, some way, time is moving that quickly. There are many more plans to check off on our list — which is an overwhelming prospect to be sure — but mostly I’m just excited for the day to be here. Time is moving so quickly, but sometimes it feels like it can’t move fast enough.

little black boxes || fancy phone photos

Sometimes you have to reduce life to little black boxes. Contain all the madness into an itty-bitty square. Especially when that madness comes in the form of your loved ones. Sorry loved ones. Don’t take it personally.

(I think I might be in trouble for something. That looks like a serious face.)

(For a while, the backlighting function of her fancy phone ceased working. Meaning she had to get creative to read the screen in the dark. Including, but not limited to, using a candle to illuminate the device. Everyone thought this was funny. Except for her.)

(Hi. This is me. As photographed by my father’s fancy phone. With the help of my father. The fancy phone, while very good at a lot of things, isn’t yet a sentient device capable of taking photos of its own volition. Yet. What a frightening notion. I digress.)

 Happy Monday to you!

on the cusp || a road trip video

At the time of filming for this particular video, we were at the edge of transition from 2012-2013. The holidays were just past us, the whole of a new year ahead. I expected a particular question was about to be popped. We traveled from Florida all the way up to central New Jersey. We spent New Year’s Eve in New York City. We saw friends, and many, many mile markers. I expected that question would be spoken while on this trip. It wasn’t (spoiler alert, for those of you just tuning in), but I will forever remember this trip as the last week of our lives as a boyfriend and girlfriend. For, just two days after we landed back in Colorado, we were engaged.

autumn or bust || wedding planning

After a few years of  photographing weddings, I thought I was fairly familiar with the wedding process. But I can now say with some degree of certainty that up until two months ago, I really had no idea of the wedding process. Ignorance is bliss, my friends.

Being on this side of things is a little overwhelming. There are deadlines to meet, to do lists to write, decisions to make, tulle to conquer (strike that, this is a tulle-free zone, consider it conquered), flowers to sniff, colors to cross examine, cake to sample (mmm….cake), all within a matter of months.

We have but the skeletal structure of our own wedding in place. The big things, like a date and a venue, have taken shape. And with those things, a season. Autumn. One of my favorite seasons. We will be married this fall in (hopefully) warm, beautiful Colorado fall weather. Dan’s sister has kindly offered to design our invitations, and asked us to find some Colorado autumn photos that she could use for inspiration. I found the above image in my archive. It was a picture I didn’t remember until I stumbled upon it, one that was almost certainly a misfire of the camera, the shutter released by a small nudge as I tromped along. It’s really quite the accidental little frame (the tilted horizon, you see), but the colors are so deliciously warm it made me pause. And it made me happy. Even with all the rambling to-dos pinging around my brain, there’s this tremendous, beautiful thing ahead of us. A transition from one season to another. I can’t wait for this fall when the color of our whole world will change to something new and fantastic. A promise, a commitment, a marriage.

Until then, please help me to remember to pause frequently amidst the chaos and breathe the whole process in.

(Followed closely by sampling some more cake. Actually, let’s start the pause with some cake samples as well. In fact, let’s just never cease sampling cake. Who’s with me?)
