Our youngest sister is grown up, wearing sparkly shoes and red dresses and leaving the high school halls for a college campus. There’s something magical about this time in life. It’s overwhelming with change, but abundant in possibilities. We couldn’t be more excited for you, girlie. Rock on.
Before she can walk across the stage, snatch up her diploma and waltz into college life, she had to don the fancy red dress and dance the night away with her senior pals. And as per tradition, I couldn’t very well send her off to prom without doing a mini-photo shoot of the prep and primp. There are more to come, friends!

I had a doozy of a blog post scheduled for today. It involved the ocean and sharks and a near death experience (yes, OK fine, I’m exaggerating). It was all set and shiny and ready to go. But, that particular story will have to wait until another day. Because this weekend, a very important and wonderful and shocking thing happened. An even bigger doozy that involved something even more shiny:
Yes, he popped the question. And yes, my first response when he dropped to one knee was, “What are you doing?!” I’m such a romantic.
And somehow he managed to do this while photographing the whole thing remotely using a trigger he was holding in his pocket. The fact that he was able to photograph it, hold his balance on one knee, on top of a rock, on top of mountain (!), while holding a ring in the other hand and propose in an eloquent, beautiful manner without falling.dropping.stuttering.plunging to his doom still shocks me. He’s like a one man circus act, this fellow. This fellow that I will be marrying. This fellow that I love very much.
He wrote a great post explaining the whole proposal in detail on our wedding photography blog. I couldn’t say it better myself, so skedaddle on over there if you’re into that kind of thing.
We’ve gotten a tremendous response from friends and family regarding our news, so I just want to take a moment to say thank you – so much – for the compassion, excitement, cheer and congratulations you’ve sent our way. We are thrilled and the support you are showing us makes it all the more amazing. Thank you, thank you.

I’m not entirely sure I put much stock in the notion of always having a Plan B. A backup plan. Because if you have a backup plan, doesn’t that indicate you don’t entirely believe in Plan A?
I’m not speaking in total black and white terms. For instance, if we are talking about the Zombie Apocalypse Town Evacuation Plan, you should probably be ready to innovate a Plan B (for brains) through Plan Z (for zombie, naturally), just in case. Don’t get so caught up in Plan A that you are literally caught by a zombie and become brain food.
I’m just saying.
However, for those of you who are still reading this (bless you, by the way), my point is this: If you have a dream, your ideal Plan A, shouldn’t you be fighting for that instead of concocting backup, just in case, Plan Bs? Sure, you have to be flexible and willing to work on a whim when inevitably something goes off script. But I advocate for owning the core of your ideal and not letting that go for anything. Not even a safe, comfortable Plan B. If you know what you want, go for it. No matter what. Adapt when necessary, but hold tight and make it happen.
And if all the forces of the universe conspire against you along the lines of a Greek drama, then become a hand model. At least that’s my plan after editing through the photos Dan took for my mother’s wedding and coming across this frame. Well, maybe just a right hand model. The left looks a little crab like.
So…this post is a special kind of something. I’m not really sure where I went wrong. Probably around the time the zombie apocalypse made a cameo appearance.

My mother got married this past Saturday. To a man who wore a red bow tie.
They married in a gold-glinting church on the campus of Stanford University in California. There was some talk about a fearsome tree. We’re still looking into that.
I will go into more details regarding the whole wonderful wedding weekend at a later date. For now, I present to you two frames from the post-first look portrait session.
