The ballroom, sparkling with natural splendor befitting the fancy hotel that housed it, remained silent. Save for one voice. A voice whose accent preserved her history and told her story.
There were no dry eyes to be found.
The small, wise, woman told us that on May 7, 1945, exactly 66 years before she would stand up on that stage in a fancy hotel, she was liberated by American forces.
Gerda Weissmann Klein survived the Holocaust.
The poms squad project has come to a close.
The girls full on rocked it out at their recital. The year of early, hard, frequent practices paid off and they showed everyone just what all that dedication stood for.
This past Monday, the poms came together for an end-of-the-year banquet to celebrate their season together. At that banquet, their coach played a slideshow of pictures from their season (some of my early project photos included). In the spirit of that grand idea, I give you a slideshow of this project.
It’s been a great run with them, these past few months, and I hope to have the opportunity to continue to work with them in the fall when their competition season rolls around again.
Until then, as my dear Elise put it, “Let us rejoice in memories!” (She’s a goof, but I think we’ll keep her anyway.)
The poms squad is prepping all this week for their final performance of the school year, a dance recital.
I’ll be joining their ranks that night – no, not as a backup dancer; my coordination would have me falling off the stage into the audience, and frankly, I don’t think that’s the big finish they’re going for – in my continued role as voluntary team photographer. It will be the final installment of this photo project. For the foreseeable future anyway.

A mind block shuts me down.
I reach out into the void that is the gray matter of my brain (which coincidentally I found out this weekend isn’t fully formed until about the 25th year of life…gives me 385 more days to use that as an excuse) and I get nothing in return.
Nothing.
The void remains a void.
